Gary Casalo
Casalo divides his retirement between refuges of solitude in the mountains of both the Ozarks and the Rockies, while longing for beaches. If he is not hiking for inspiration then his joy is creating new ways of seeing with paint. Giving motion and depth to a flat surface with a universe of raucous and gaudy color is the goal of Casalo’s paintings. If one creates bold surfaces of riotous color in a myriad of abstract depth, the resulting chaos can prove to be confounding. In order to see this way, the viewer has to bring something to the looking. Casalo will often turn a work in progress upside down to see if there’s a better painting that way. The meaning of this approach to art involves the search for mystery while expecting the unexpected. This creative process involves watching and waiting for the subject matter to gradually reveal itself. Painting for Casalo is like life, always adapting to change. So relish the journey into Casalo’s universe of luscious color.
